Early music meets Gothic spookiness

  • We Say...

After a decade building a devoted independent and overseas following, Dead Can Dance issued this collection in 1991 — their first U.S. release — and introduced a larger Stateside audience to their provocative, orchestral arrangements and ancient instrumentation. Though A Passage in Time hopscotches through much of the band's career, it places particular focus on the period just prior to its release: 1988's elegiac The Serpent's Egg and 1990's Renaissance-themed, melodious Aion.

Collected here are many of the duo's most inspired vocal performances, including Lisa Gerrard's haunting soprano chants in "Cantara" and dazzling solos in "The Host of Seraphim," as well as Brendan Perry's stirring baritone, which makes the sparse "Severance" and the chilling "In the Kingdom of the Blind the One-Eyed Are Kings" absolutely swell with emotion. The collection also contains two songs as-yet unavailable when it was originally released ("Bird" and "Spirit") that hint toward the sound the band would explore in the coming years, making A Passage in Time an excellent primer for those new to the mysteries of Dead Can Dance.
