  • They Say...

The missing link between Primal Scream (the earlier, '60s jangle-obsessed version of the band, that is) and the far more self-assured and interesting Adventures in Stereo, Spirea X was a short-lived duo of Jim Beattie and Judith Boyle that tried to place Beattie's freakbeat obsessions in the cultural milieu defined by the likes of Ride and My Bloody Valentine. Songs like the dreamy closer "Sunset Dawn" and the near-psychedelic "Nothing Happened Yesterday" (which blatantly cops lyrics from the Who's "The Kids Are Alright") sound as if Beattie wanted them to be slices of spare, Rickenbacker-bedecked dreamy indie jangle, but they're covered with acid house basslines (think of the primal influence the Stone Roses' debut album had on the British indie scene in 1990) and overdubbed washes of atmospheric keyboards and guitar noise. Surprisingly, the album works quite well due to the strength of Beattie's songs; admittedly, it also helps considerably to like the sonic tropes of the early-'90s shoegazer scene. A brittle, largely electronic version of Love's "Signed D.C." points in the direction that Beattie and Boyle would later pursue with Adventures in Stereo.
