  • They Say...

The second volume in this two-disc series, like the first one, brings together recordings by unsigned and basically unknown purveyors of "bedroom electronica" -- music made on home equipment by inspired amateurs. And as with the first volume, the compositions are surprisingly and consistently good. Rhythm Chord System's "Evil Is as Evil Did" alternates jazzy horns, bass, and keyboards with meat-and-potato breakbeats to very nice effect; Jack L. Lantern contributes a tantalizingly brief snippet of borderline-abstract beat sculpture called "Gestation"; Tingler's " Who's That" combines Indian violin with floating synth washes, juddering breakbeats, and the occasional incursion of virtuosic turntablism. Pay attention to the track listing on the back and you'll see that this disc consists of only about a half hour of music, but pay attention to the price tag and you'll also see that it costs less than ten bucks (or should -- do not pay more). Here's hoping that either the series continues or the label starts releasing full-lengths by some of these artists. Or both.
