They Say...
Wendy Bucklew's Asleep in the Swing (reissued as a self-titled album) is a folky singer/songwriter album with an appealingly soulful sound. Her singing isn't as overpowering as Janis Joplin, for example, but she does have some of Melissa Etheridge's grit without sounding raspy or overwrought. She isn't quite as jazzy as Joni Mitchell, but her voice does swoop and soar on occasion instead of just following a staid route, and she does manage to make her music sound both intimate and sophisticated, even though the album doesn't have a lot of fancy instrumentation. The songs usually feature Bucklew on acoustic guitar, DeDe Vogt on electric bass, and Jason Mogi on drums; occasionally there's an electric guitar, a few tracks have harmony vocals, and there's an accordion on "One Good Reason," a cello on "Rewind, Play," and a couple other instruments here and there (although both "Big Box" and "Oh, Well feature just Bucklew and her guitar). The musicianship is generally good, as are the songs themselves, and overall this is a very satisfying album.
