  • They Say...

"And when there's nothing on the radio I dream of you/You are the sweetest song I sing along to," sings a lion-hearted Brodeur of Albany, NY, on the opening track, "Infected (So in Love With You)," of this modest little power-pop platter. Were I a girl, I would swoon and ponder his marital status. With crying guitar leads out of your favorite Badfinger single and a post-early-XTC new wave urgency in the snippy bass and drums, he unabashedly professes his smitten-hood, and you wonder if recent generations weren't a tad hasty for all but disposing of the breezy, light-hearted, insistent pop love song that was once so enlivening in the 1960s. Mixing similar wares in some acoustic-pop with lullaby effects/melodies, such as "Remains of a Heart" and "Selfish," the unknown Brodeur seems as good as he is earnest, blithe, and heart-on-sleeve. Although there's an amateur air of home recording, these songs are completely crafted, fully-realized little pop pastries-a little like Robyn Hitchcock without the nasal tone or accent. If you're ever in our New York State Capital, this is the man for your pub night. To paraphrase another song here, we're "such a sucker, we fall for it every time."
