They Say...
Lyrics must be what matter to Suzanne McDermott; they move outside and around the structure of her music. This could be exciting, but she doesn't have enough elasticity in the music to make asymmetrical structures work. One wishes the songs were even more free form, allowing the free verse to tell her stories. Otherwise these are lovely songs, produced simply and sung from the heart. Her vocals are intimate and breathy with a rich deep timbre. The record sounds great with a spaciousness that can only be described as old (not old-fashioned, but present and natural).
