  • They Say...

Leland Martin's release on IGO Records is an accurate reflection of the singer's roots and musical influences. Simply Traditional is everything its title professes, with enough character to please the younger generation of country fans. The cuts prove that Martin knows what it takes to write a clever song, as with "If I Had Long Legs (Like Alan Jackson)," with its impressive weaving of top-name country stars in its lyric. Martin's "More Than Friends" will choke up even the coldest of the cold. The acoustic version of "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" is hauntingly spiritual and the bonus Christmas tracks are original, though a bit mismatched with the rest of the CD. From beginning to end, Martin pays tribute to traditional country with sincere vocals, the cry of the fiddle and steel, and songs about the legends, including a guest appearance by Freddie Hart. Hopefully the folks on music row and country radio will stand up and take notice of this rising star.
