  • They Say...

With artists from Japan, U.S., Canada, Germany, Sweden, Italy, and England, this compilation unquestionably shows the universality of the emo genre and its affect on independent musicians everywhere. Compared to the rather drab fifth chapter, The Silence in My Heart sparkles. None of the artists fall flat on their face. Many of them rock and leave it at that. Others not only rock, but do so in a unique and interesting manner, giving the emo genre a needed boost of fresh energy and creativity. Rising to the challenge, they emerge with superb contributions, each doing so in their own way. Naht mixes intriguing Axl Rose-like vocals with strings, while Barcode throws in some twangy guitar at the end of their tune. Southpaw has one of the more annoying contributions, which is unfortunate since they start the compilation. In reference to the annoyance of their track, "Hub," is the inane chorus of "I'm the major player at the heart of this whole damn scene" which ruins an otherwise perfectly good track. The Dead Red Sea (ex-Cross My Heart) and Benton Falls (ex-Ethel Meserve) both contain members of former glorious bands, so it's understood that their tracks will be superb and they are. Besides these aforementioned tracks, the subtle highlight of the album is Berkley, CA's Andherson. Their contribution contains a chorus breakdown ideal in its eerie harmonies. Add another vocalist who screams and this would be perfect. For those who haven't heard a copy of the Emo Diaries (and who hasn't?), this would be a good chapter to start with. Individuals who are already fans of the series will definitely appreciate the added creativity which the last chapter seemingly lacked.
