  • They Say...

Deep Elm's Emo Diaries Vol. 7 series again sheds light on some of the undiscovered talent lurking in the corners of the famously earnest genre. Sonically, it is a little more diverse, or at least there are a few left turns among all the quiet-loud dynamics this time around. Italy's One Starving Day offers the brooding "Animus," while This Beautiful Mess' "Racing the Mosaic" sounds (in a good way) like the Pixies on the wrong speed. The awesomely named "Karate Mansions" comes from the equally awesomely named Halifax Code, while the acoustic chording of Drive Til Morning is a welcome respite from the crunch of electric guitar that normally accompanies emo's heartfelt lyricisms. Just as worthy as its Emo Diaries brethren yet filled with refreshing moments of instrumental or melodic experimentation, Vol. 7 is sure to please the Deep Elm faithful and is a good introductory calling card for many of its participants.
