  • They Say...

The Booginz offer a unique brand of funk/crossover/metal on their full-length debut, Aftermath of I-79. Their abstract style will surely bring a wealth of comparisons to the highly respected Mr. Bungle and the younger, slightly more aggressive Dog Fashion Disco. While these four men from the Midwest aren't the best musicians, they do play with impressive energy, blasting through ten hectic and often disturbing songs. With such questionable titles as "Hermaphrodite," "Sunset Strap-On," and "Cest House," it's apparent the four have a twisted sense of humor, yet that alone is their greatest strength. The humor makes their songs enjoyable, unpredictable jolts of laughter-riddled creativity. When vocalist George slips into his hip-hop rants, the Booginz find themselves on shaky ground, as his skills are certainly limited in this area. Ben's bass playing brings to mind the Red Hot Chili Pepper's Flea, albeit not as exceptionally funky. The Booginz step forth with an interesting style, yet time and time again they come off as just a second-rate Mr. Bungle. Not to knock Aftermath of I-79, as those who find their musical preferences wandering toward the bizarre would accept this album with open arms, but for all its uniqueness, it has been done before.
