  • They Say...

A refreshing compilation from a new label hoping to kick-start a new style, the astonishing Sound Ink: Colapsus definitely succeeds on all counts. Comprising a few familiar names (and many more obscure ones) in the growing fusion of junkyard hip-hop and heavily processed electronica, the compilation has the same sense of flow that made 1999's Quannum Spectrum sound more like a single-artist album. There's a devastatingly dark atmosphere to the proceedings and a take-no-prisoners air to the productions -- cribbing from Indian music, '80s pop, post-punk, even IDM. Producer King Honey is responsible for two of the highlights: the opener "Motions" (with Mental) and "Monday Night at Fluid" (with MF Doom, Kurious, and King Ghidra). Another great track comes at the end, with a collaboration between techno producer John Tejada and rapper Divine Styler. All in all, it's one of the most important records for underground hip-hop since Quannum Spectrum or The Cold Vein.
