Irresistible soul and funk versions of old chestnuts.

  • We Say...

The best part of the night is rarely the main event; it's the hours leading up to it, when the distant prospects of midnight still seem pregnant with possibility. The fourth volume of Ubiquity Records' present-meets-past Rewind! series serves up some simply irresistible moments: Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings reclaim their stake with a smoldering funk version of "This Land Is Our Land," while Rebirth gives the Mighty Ryeders' disco gem "Evil Vibrations" a cosmic makeover. Elsewhere, Sa-Ra takes on Sly & the Family Stone's seesawing "Just Like a Baby," Nostalgia 77 gives the White Stripes some soul and Shawn Lee slows things back down (because you should really pace yourself) with a smoky version of Nick Drake's "River Man." The perfect soundtrack for the pre-party, the backyard cookout or the ride to wherever it is you want to go; making things happen once you get there is up to you.
