  • They Say...

Quebec-born, Vancouver-based country singer Trudy Jane's first album is appealing traditional country that evokes not just old-school country divas like Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn, but also the next generation of "new traditionalist" country singers that first appeared in the '80s. Loving & Leavin' lacks the overt pop orientation of folks like Faith Hill or fellow Canadian Shania Twain, but terrific songs like "Show and Tell" mix the traditional two-step rhythms, fiddles, and steel guitar with some subtle pop flourishes. The songs are uniformly catchy, although ballads like "Tender Love" and "Telling on You" are a bit nondescript, especially in comparison with a smart, funny number like the frothy, horn-spiked "No News of You," which features both the album's best lyrics and most singable chorus. An impressive debut, Loving & Leavin' is old-school country that doesn't sound slavishly tradition-bound.
