  • They Say...

A better set all around than their debut of two years earlier, Heaven Can Wait shows Lisa Matthews and Mikel Gehl's songwriting delving into slightly more adventurous and ambitious territory. With a more sympathetic production angle, the guitars are fuller, Willem Elzevir's mandolin and violin playing rings out nicely, and Ron Campbell's move to a cocktail-style drum kit (which he plays standing up) does as much for the band's studio sound as it does for their live performance dynamic. Matthews sings of the ins and outs of love again in a voice that flaunts proudly every pop convention she has absorbed in the last 20 years. Sometimes, as on "Satisfied," she sounds like she's singing on yet another one of the radio jingles she has recorded in recent years to augment a modest musician's income, but all around, her confidence is rewarding. Fans will treasure this one.
