Rousing ‘70s-style hard rock from North Carolina.

We Say...
It’s easy to forget how complex '70s mid-American hard rock was until you hear it done right again: Neil Carswell has an awesome high register and his catchiest and most rousing song, "Keepin' On," rolls out its changes like "Roll With the Changes" by REO Speedwagon. That these North Carolinans cover "Drift Away" (way better than Uncle Kracker) makes perfect sense given Carswell's gruff soul-country side project Southwind. And the acid-rock-organed "Free Man," like all great free-man songs, reminds me of South Shore Commission's great early gay disco classic "Free Man," though this one seems to concern getting out of prison.
