These songs slink and whisper, aiming to move hearts instead of mountains.

  • We Say...

The latest batch of bedroom suites from Josh Rouse is softer and subtler and spookier than his previous outings. The songs slink and whisper, nestled in echo and gauzy atmospherics. "Last Train" is a slow ride on an empty highway at midnight, nothing but black sky and open fields. "Soul'd Out" is a folky diary entry glued together by wheezing squeezebox. The clue is in the album title — the songs are small and personal, introspective even by Rouse's standards and aiming to move hearts instead of mountains.
