Good luck catching your breath!

  • We Say...

The United States has the New Pornographers, but Chile has El Pornographers Nuevo — or Los Bunkers, as they prefer to be called. Los Bunkers are an excellent twice-sibling'd quintet with lyrics en español and music in power-pop. Brothers/guitarists Mauricio and Francisco Duran liberally employ the chunky riffs of everyone from Weezer to Thin Lizzy to Matthew Sweet to Big Star to Superdrag in search of the big fuzz in the sky, and on several occasions they get there, most notably in "Tú," the sort of maddeningly catchy tune for which the repeat button was invented. The verses are sly, the chorus bright (the piano punctuations are a very nice touch) and the overlapping vocals between the two are just plain evil: aside the tremolo'd guitar solo, good luck catching your breath while humming along. "Llueve Sobre La Ciudad," the record's first single, is a cutely snarling track, and another notable standout. To put it another way: esto disco es no perro.
