  • We Say...

Though he's released five albums of driving, earnest pop, Minneapolis songwriter Mark Mallman is best known for a highly-publicized stunt. In 1999, Mallman performed a single song for 26 hours, a feat unheard of in the realm of pop music. Not content to rest on his laurels, Mallman doubled the length five years later, making a single song last 52 hours. What's most satisfying about Between the Devil and Middle C is the fact that Mallman's songs sound good even at a truncated length. With their clanging pianos, grimy guitars and Mallman's throaty vocals, the tracks that make up Devil have a steeliness and resiliency, burying pop hooks at the center of rugged musicianship. Mallman may have gained notoriety through a gimmick, but his music is no cheap trick.
