He was a man whose life — often turbulent, often full of pain — was anchored totally in his Protestant belief. Bach’s creativity in the cantata genre is jaw-dropping: there is variety and depth but above all there is a responsiveness to text that confirms Bach as quite simply the greatest composer ever. Joy issues from every note: here is a man whose music celebrates the potential of human creativity in a way only revealed to a handful of great artists. Gardiner’s recordings are themselves touched with a joy of their own.
