They Say...
Coalescence: Harmonic Singing in a Water Tower, Recorded by Candlelight is one of the most "amazing" albums ever. But be careful -- it is not one of the "best," although it is excellent; it is one of the most "amazing." Jim Cole and Spectral Voices retired to a water tower "only a stone's throw from civilization" and as far out in space as possible. There, behind thick steel walls, in a cylinder 120 feet tall, Cole and company created gorgeous spacescapes using only the human voice and the natural processing of the tower's echo. These folks have an incredible gift that allows them to sing in overtone harmonics -- two or more notes at once. The effect is similar to that of Tibetan and other singing bowls. With the acoustics of the tower, this allows for very eerie and very spacy sounds. Even the most intensely focused listeners will hear a synthesizer, but there is none. This breathtaking soundscape is completely acoustic and completely natural. The only logical comparisons are Tibetan overtone chants and Tuvan throat singers.
