  • We Say...

Having recently unearthed the excellent Kashmere Stage Band from the domain of thrift stores and dusty, unused hi-fi’s, Now Again (Stone Throw’s rare funk imprint) checks in again with another slab of hot soul for your delectation.

Amnesty were Indianapolis’ finest funk band in the early ‘70s. And although the hook is often their political awareness (i.e. “Mister President,” “Liberty”), their greatest moments may come when they’re not saying much at all. “We Have Love” would be a meeting of an avant-garde vocal group if it weren’t for the glacial backing track holding the “um”’s, “oh”’s and “ah”’s together neatly. And, on the well-oiled upbeat machine that is “Love Fades,” the group is so tight the lead vocalist doesn’t even bother to sing words most of the time, instead opting for a wordless duet with the wah-wah guitar.
