Hey, Los Straitjackets! Top this! The Luchagors not only have a similar fascination with Mexican wrestler mythology, from the band name (adapted from "luchador," the Latin American term for this type of wrestler, and "gore," as in the Cramps) to the colorful masks all over the DC Comics-derived artwork for their debut album, this Atlanta-based garage-punk act features a real life former Mexican wrestler as their lead singer! Although Amy Dumas, the Luchagors' imposing frontwoman, spent the early part of her wrestling career under a satin mask on the lucha libre circuit, she's better known to American audiences as Lita, one of the top female stars of the WWE from 2000 to 2006. Making the easy sidestep from one form of scripted entertainment to another, Dumas and guitarist/boyfriend Shane Morton proffer an easily digestible blend of ramalama bubble-punk and the sort of semi-ironic trash culture celebrations first pioneered by the Ramones over thirty years ago. The Luchagors are pretty good at this sort of thing (the Holly & the Italians-like girl group pastiche "Daddy's Girl" is particularly swell), and lord knows they don't take themselves the least bit seriously. But for full enjoyment, it may be necessary to remind oneself that not every band needs to reinvent the pop-punk wheel.
