  • They Say...

Remember the Cheapskates, mainstays of New York's ‘80s garage revival scene? Their bassist/songwriter Low had been laying low (couldn't resist, sorry) since, although this is his third solo outing this decade, and it bears the mark of long experience. Recorded in Greensboro, NC, Time tries on several pop-rock styles (including a few quiet choral numbers), even reinventing his 1987 Remember Cheapskates track "Where Are You Now?" as if it was the Hollies covering Buddy Holly. (Love that jangle guitar, also found on "Not the Lucky Ones" and "One Fine Day.") Low is best, however, with the Badfinger-lead-guitar-heavy, hooky power-pop of the opening "Winter of Black Ice" -- which fits smashingly with the Not Lame label that included him on their International Pop Overthrow Vol.5 comp -- and the Spanish trumpets of "This Old House." Not just another singer/songwriter: Low can write, and that's the difference.
