  • They Say...

The full-length debut by Chicago art rock trio the Slow Moving Machines alternates between solid instrumentals and less effective vocal tracks. The Slow Moving Machines are the sort of band who would be best served by going all instrumental, in large part because guitarist Matt Bailey is no great shakes either as a singer or a lyricist but mostly because the instrumental tracks on All Space Must Be Filled are an entertaining blend of technical showboating, jam band grooves (the Phish-like "Weasel Sex" was pretty much made for large groups of pasty Trustifarians to do the Awkward White Guy Wiggle to), and stately prog rock that mostly stays on the right side of pretentiousness. The other half of the album, vocal tracks like the eye-rollingly simplistic "Gratify the Machine" and the awkwardly half-rapped "Something Easy to Think About," distract from the enjoyable aspects of the instrumentals, thanks to Bailey's thin voice and trite lyrics.
