After an excursion into singer-songwriter territory and a stint racking up film and TV production credits (his "A Beautiful Mind" is the opening theme for Mad Men), RJD2 returns to the winning sound of his post-DJ Shadow dusty-grooved instrumental hip-hop. Opener "Let There Be Horns" is an exuberant shot across the bow — an impossibly funky loose jumble of breakbeats punctuated by late Miles-sounding keyboard stabs and, well... horns. The production on Colossus is impressively layered and warm. Incorporating vocals from a variety of guests (Kenna, Phonte of Little Brother and more), the album plays like an impeccably-curated mixtape of decades-old funk and soul. An assured, welcome return to form.
