  • We Say...

Rapper/producer Brendon Whitney’s talent has always been one for beatmaking and arranging. He publicly copped to it, too, all but ceding the words to his work to others since his debut, The Other Side of the Looking Glass. That’s why it should come as no surprise that a collection of his remixes should be such a successful venture.

Whitney drags each track through his filter of stuttered electronic beats and drawn-out synth chords throughout, but with such a varied cast of characters, the results are rarely stale. Lali Puna’s “Alienation,” feels warmer than ever, Lunz’s “Clue” is transformed into an instrumental tour de force and John Vanderslice is given the epic, shoegaze-meets-hip-hop treatment on a remix of “Exodus Damage.” As this compilation and his 2006 collaboration with Tarsier proves amply, Alias belongs in the control room, wringing out every last bit of emotion his machines can give him.
