They Say...
On MCMLXXXV (1985), Rufio culls a lot of traits from groups such as blink-182 and Jimmy Eat World, especially on the melodic yet frantic "Countdown." Although lead singer Scott Sellers has a strong voice, it works well in tandem with the tight arrangements. "White Lights" is slower in tempo, but the guitars of Sellers and Clark Domae have the distinct "emo punk" feeling. "Science Fiction" is easily one of the shining moments of the record, a high-energy number that sounds like a cross between Green Day and Rancid. "Set It Off" possesses the same intensity and is a close second. The song also has a few interesting twists and turns near the homestretch. A few efforts don't work quite as well, particularly "Why Wait?" Having a similar blueprint, the structure and playing sounds tamer than previous songs. Rufio gives "We Exist" a definite eclectic feeling thanks to the quasiclassical guitar solos in some sections, resembling Metallica. "Control" has a slower mid-tempo tone with an arena rock chorus capability. "Pirate" has an extremely catchy and bouncy riff to it that is appealing. Ending with "Over It," another strong effort, the group has a promising future ahead.
