We Say...
Before increased ambition brought them into the realm of the buzzworthy, AFI's defining trait was a naked, unabashed love of all things Misfits. The All Hallow's EP proves that being derivative could still reap rewards. The three originals that surround their cover of Danzig & Co.'s "Halloween" are energetic old-school pummels topped with Davey Havok's youthful croon and a frequent chant of "woah-oh-oh." Havok bellows in a deeper register than usual on "Fall Children," which actually makes the song sound more like the Misfits than "Halloween" does. The end of "Boy Who Destroyed the World" and the entirety of "Total Immortal" show signs of the nervous grandeur that would increase as AFI pushed the exaggerated cowlicks from out of their faces, but still reek of the sweaty punk clubs that had been their home for almost a decade. This one is strictly for fans, but crucial for those who apply.
