  • We Say...

A.F.I.'s third full-length is mere juvenilia when compared to the ambitious releases that followed; still, it stands as a solid — if personality-free — slice of late-'90s hardcore. The album consists almost entirely of blitzkrieg thrash for the mosh pit; only on "Third Season" do the screams and power chords subside for a mid-tempo bass line and Danzig-like bellowing. "Today's Lesson" shares enough with Minor Threat's "In My Eyes" to stand out, but the band's generic lyrical hooks — "fuck you" and "right now I hate you" — crimp the fun. The album closes with three of the strongest tracks, "Today's Lesson," "The Devil Loves You" and the funk-tinged "Triple Zero," a relative epic at two minutes and 50 seconds. While effective as a shot of adrenaline, Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes would be long forgotten were it not for A.F.I.'s later critical and commercial success.
