Although A Study In Her has had a number of members shift in and out of its lineup, especially in its live incarnations, the Washington DC bedroom electronica act has remained primary a vehicle for singer and synthesist Constantine Nakassis. On their third album, 2005's Peripheries of Hollywood, Nakassis opens up the project a bit at the beginning: opening track "Mistaxonomy" is a punky, guitar-driven track written and sung by regular collaborator Lucas Carscadden, and the hyperactive house beats and gum overdubbed vocals of "Robot Cocaine" are courtesy of another standby, Alex Hedstrom. Aside from those outliers, however, Peripheries of Hollywood largely sticks to the playbook defined by Nakassis' earlier releases, featuring minimalist synthesizers and sequencers, occasional piano and acoustic guitar, minor-key tunes and hushed vocals delivering neutral-to-downcast lyrics. Two more co-writes with Carscadden, "My End Again On Videotape" and the quietly tense, bass-driven album high point "Under the Asphalt," are among Peripheries of Hollywood's best songs, suggesting that transforming fully into a collaborative full-time band with a stable lineup might bring them up from the pleasant but forgettable act A Study In Her currently is.
