Max Roach's wife, joined by an all-star lineup, cuts to the heart.

  • We Say...

Max Roach's wife didn't have the strongest or most flexible voice among jazz singers, but every word she sang cut to the heart like a hot knife through butter; her musical integrity was as uncompromising as her politics and she embodied the jazz zeitgeist. Here she's joined by an all-star lineup anchored by Roach and featuring Eric Dolphy, Coleman Hawkins, Booker Little, Mal Waldron and Julian Priester. Thelonious himself gave thumbs-up to Abbey's eye-winkingly somber interpretation of "Blue Monk," while the buoyant, knowing "When Malindy Sings" is a high point for singer and ensemble alike; "African Lady" and "Retribution" put her ethos on the line and "Left Alone" pays her debt to Billie Holiday.

  • They Say...

Reissued several times since it originally came out on a Candid LP, this is one of Abbey Lincoln's greatest recordings. It is a testament to the credibility of her very honest music (and her talents) that Lincoln's sidemen on this date include the immortal tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins (who takes a memorable solo on "Blue Monk"), Eric Dolphy on flute and alto, trumpeter Booker Little (whose melancholy tone is very important in the ensembles), pianist Mal Waldron, and drummer Max Roach. Highpoints include "When Malindy Sings," "Blue Monk," Billie Holiday's "Left Alone," and "African Lady."
