Three blues titans have a grand old time

  • We Say...

Collins and Copeland were old running buddies from Houston's blues-drenched Third Ward of the late '50s and early '60s, neither of whom emerged nationally until 15-20 years later, while Cray was still a struggling newcomer when this session first came out. But everybody sounds right at home, Cray's soul-blues voice and lighter guitar touch a nice counterpoint to Copeland's raspy, roaring vocals and Collins' muscular guitar. Copeland may be the star of the set; both "Bring Your Fine Self Home" and "Black Cat Bone" push his voice to its rawest edge, while his ferocious solo on the latter makes even the Iceman take a back seat. But then, Collins not only acquits himself handsomely on guitar on the former, but he throws in some unexpected harmonica as well. The two Houstonians take "Black Cat Bone" out with a searing guitar duel. Cray, meanwhile, slinks through "She's Into Something" and everybody gets to take a nice bite out of "T-Bone Shuffle." Plenty of hot licks to go around here, but not in a show-offy way; the longtime Copeland-Collins friendship makes for a laid back brand of cool, calm and confidence as well, and the youthful Cray is savvy enough to go with that.

  • They Say...

Most of the original "blues summit" and blues "supergroup" type gatherings, which were done at Chess Records, were musically pointless affairs, mostly because the artists involved really didn't like the idea behind the albums being recorded or the company they were forced to keep during the recording process. What makes Showdown! work is that the three featured players actually liked each other and enjoyed working together -- even more important, they had something to say together musically, which just pours out of the contents of this jewel of a record, a summit meeting between Texas guitar veterans Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland and newcomer Robert Cray -- the set is scorching all the way. Collins even treats us to some harmonica playing that's more than a match for his guitar work on "Bring Your Fine Self Home," and the only pity is there's no other contribution by him on the harp anywhere else here. It's all worth hearing, many times over, and if you can't get the Mobile Fidelity version, find the Alligator Records CD, but get this album.
