  • They Say...

Although Stax is always thought of as a soul label, there was some blues recordings of merit that emanated from the label, with Albert King spearheading the charge. This 12-track set rounds up some of the more notable suspects. King is on here three times, with his own "Cold Sweat" and "Drownin' on Dry Land" and in a trio setting with Steve Cropper and Pops Staple on "Tupelo." There's also a pair each from Jimmy McCracklin and Johnnie Taylor, and representative tracks from Pops Staples, Little Milton, John Lee Hooker, Little Sonny, and the mysterious Mighty Joe Hicks. An interesting, seldom-explored side of this well-known label.
