The best collection of this reflective, more organic style of reggae.

  • We Say...

Reggae has always been music to tell the time by, both a means to escape and a vehicle for grass-roots social commentary. Since a rising tide of gun violence and Hurricane Ivan ripped through Jamaica in 2004, the balance has shifted from the verbal gymnastics and glacial riddims of roughneck dancehall to a reflective, more organic style known as “one-drop.” The Biggest Reggae One-Drop Anthems 2005 is about the best collection of this music available. Combining ghetto realism with honeyed melody, Gyptian’s “Serious Times” is a perfect example, including the lines: “All I can see around us is just violence and crime/ Full time to centralise, socialise and realise.” Similar sentiments appear in Sizzla’s “Be Strong,” Buju Banton & Anthony Cruz’s “Place Too Bloody” and Richie Spice’s “Operation Kingfish,” named for the Jamaican police’s initiative against organized crime. Meanwhile, Perfect’s upful love song “Handcart Boy” and Jah Mason’s “My Princess Gone” add that personal touch.
