They Say...
Robin Storey, aka Rapoon, returns with the third installment in his three-part Alien Glyph Morphology triptych, which isn't so much a series as a multi-format release extended over several years. This album began life as a DVD packaged with a set of tarot-like cards; then there was a set of two 10" records packaged in a wooden case; now comes the CD version, with one bonus track and two extended versions, issued in a limited release of 400 in an elaborate handmade folder. Apart from its interest as a physical object and art piece, Alien Glyph Morphology offers music that is richly layered and sometimes a bit unnerving. "Chromium Dreams" is like a remix of the sound of Jon Hassell being slowly buried in cement; "Welcome to the Space Age" sounds like someone put a Casiotone keyboard on the "samba" setting and then splintered the resulting sounds into a million fragments, with a dubwise female vocal on top; "Condensed Nightmares" is an apt title for a track that combines quietly threatening murmurs with cheesy sci-fi synth, echoey wordless vocals, and a robotically syncopated drum part. Everything works great, except for "Paranoia of Abstraction," which juxtaposes trumpet with jittery and strangely arrythmic drumming and never really gets off the ground. Highly recommended overall.
