Be it roots or digital reggae, the ‘baby-making’ vibe rules on Lovers Rock.

We Say...
Born in London’s Caribbean neighborhoods during the mid ’70s, the style of reggae dubbed Lovers Rock sounded a note of welcomed sweetness amidst the preponderance of heavy, politicized ‘sufferer’s’ reggae that reigned in the years before Bob Marley’s death. Lovers Rock was noteworthy not only for the international impact of its romantic sounds — established Jamaican stars on the order of Dennis Brown and Gregory Isaacs adopted the style — but for allowing more women singers to be heard in the largely male, occasionally misogynistic world of reggae.
UK reggae label Greensleeves was an early champion of the style, and This Is Lovers Rock culls popular favorites from their own Cool Rockers imprint, as well as from other tastemakers such as UK Bubblers, Ariwa and Fashion Records. Of course, nothing grows in a vacuum; the sensuality and polish of contemporary Philly soul hits by the Stylistics and the Delfonics (many of the latter produced by Thom Bell, himself a Jamaican) is central to all of the tracks heard here, notably Carrol Thompson’s “I’m So Sorry” and the widescreen ambience of “Country Living” by Sandra Cross and the Wild Bunch. Considered as a whole, This Is Lovers Rock draws a straight line from cultural reggae’s massive bass through to the advent of computer rhythms that colored Jamaican dancehall sounds in the ‘80s, with nary a speedbump between the two eras.
