  • They Say...

It is often the case that music defies words. In this case, the music defines the words of German theorists Marcus S. Kleiner and Marvin Chlada who assert that "Pop music is a zombie" in the liner text taken from their book, Klangmaschine, that is meant as a companion to this CD. And while further reading reveals an amusing if somewhat senseless futurist play that alludes to playwright Heiner Muller and writer F.T. Marinetti, one need not have an advanced degree in literature or theater to appreciate these minimal electronic recordings by leading producers Taylor Deupree, Alva.Noto, and Twerk. The music employs the glitching experimental mode of soundscapes with tweetering buzzes and clips that drift over gaseous white noise. Only tracks by Frank Bretschneider and John Harding utilize any discernible rhythm, while Terre Thaemlitz makes the single break from synthetic sound construction, instead favoring plasticized chamber tones and broken torch song vocals to reach the same digitized ambient results. How this ties in to the conceptual text is anyone's guess, although each track title contains the word "maschine" and the closing recorded dialogue between the two authors in their German tongue certainly makes it all sound authentic. No need to worry too much about the theory, however. Simply listen to the spacious audio musings and enjoy.
