"I celebrate myself, and sing myself" (Walt Whitman)

  • We Say...

Two great West-Coast American mavericks doing their own thing! Both men — Hovhaness living in Seattle and Harrison near Santa Cruz, CA — followed their own instincts, producing music that was unapologetically tonal, melodic and buoyed on lush harmonies. Both men looked to the Far East for inspiration (closer to where they lived than Europe!) and wove musical magic — magic that is brought vividly to life here. Harrison's music has an immediate and deep appeal. Afterwards, Hovhaness's Mysterious Mountain almost sounds like Vaughan Williams, such is its modal but epic splendour.
