  • They Say...

Calling this 14-song set the "very best" of Aretha Franklin is kind of a stretch, since it lacks key tracks like her versions of "I Never Loved a Man," "Think," and "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man," although it does have undeniable classics like "Respect" and "Chain of Fools," and the fun, irresistible "Soulville." Still, it's mildly jarring to hear her soulful Atlantic sides next to the decidedly less immediate Columbia sides, but then this is Aretha, and she could sing the phone book and make it worth your time.
