  • They Say...

After nearly a decade of relative stability, the turnover in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers greatly increased during the veteran drummer's last four years. This was not due to dissatisfaction with his dedication to hard bop and hard-swinging but to Blakey's desire to play with as many of the promising young jazzmen as possible. The CD Feeling Good, The Jazz Messengers' only recording from 1986-87, features a septet with trumpeter Wallace Roney, altoist Kenny Garrett and holdovers Jean Toussaint (on tenor), trombonist Tim Williams and pianist Donald Brown. The repertoire includes both new originals and a few Messenger standbys; the music is consistently enjoyable.
