  • We Say...

Art Blakey was not only the most energetic drummer in jazz but also its keenest impresario, recruiting more young sidemen who became stars than any other bandleader. The Jazz Messengers who played on Ugetsu (Freddie Hubbard, trumpet; Wayne Shorter, tenor sax; Curtis Fuller, trombone; Cedar Walton, piano; Reggie Workman, bass) may have been the most brilliant incarnation of all, and this album — recorded at Birdland in June, 1963, two years into their tenure — is a standout: tight, boisterous, lyrical and hard-driving all at once.
