A gifted soloist turns in a collection of modern jazz classics

  • We Say...

On its 1959 release this album was billed as "a treasury of modern jazz classics," and the blurb-writer didn't lie. Although his career was blighted by repeated drug convictions, Art Pepper still found time to provide ample evidence that he was one of the most gifted soloists of his era; his work on these dozen modern jazz standards ranks among his most inspired performances. The arrangements for the 11-man backing ensemble were written by Marty Paich (father of Toto's David), who'd created charts for big-band titans Count Basie, Woody Herman and Stan Kenton as well as premier jazz vocalists Lena Horne and Ella Fitzgerald. The sessions sizzle and scorch right from the tingling introduction of "Move," a piece made legendary on Miles Davis' 1949 Birth of the Cool sessions, and whether it's a ballad like "'Round Midnight" or a bop blast like "Shaw Nuff," Pepper and friends are at the top of their game.

  • They Say...

This is a true classic. Altoist Art Pepper is joined by an 11-piece band playing Marty Paich arrangements of a dozen jazz standards from the bop and cool jazz era. Trumpeter Jack Sheldon has a few solos, but the focus is very much on the altoist who is in peak form for this period. The CD reissue adds two additional versions of "Walkin'" and one of "Donna Lee" to the original program. Throughout, Pepper sounds quite inspired by Paich's charts which feature the band as an active part of the music rather than just in the background. Highlights of this highly enjoyable set include "Move," "Four Brothers," "Shaw Nuff," "Anthropology," and "Donna Lee," but there is not a single throwaway track to be heard. Essential music for all serious jazz collections.
