A virtual primer on Chopin playing, from one of Chopin's greatest performers

  • We Say...

Do musicians have a special affinity for music from their homeland, or a particular insight into the same? Nobody plays American music like Americans, for example, or Russian music like Russians. His Polish descent may help explain why pianist Arthur Rubinstein became one of the greatest performers of the music of his compatriot Chopin. This disc gives a good overview of Rubinstein's strength as a Chopin player: it includes the Sonata no. 2 (with the popular Funeral March), one of Chopin's few essays in large-scale forms; the gemlike 24 Preludes, op. 28; and three shorter pieces. A master of the Romantic style, Rubinstein's tempo fluctuations are always flexible, sometimes excitingly extreme, never mannered. Listen to the dancelike second-movement Scherzo of the Sonata for a good example. For a similar flexibility coupled with a rippling deftness, check out the last half-minute of the Barcarolle; for dazzling virtuosity, preludes #8 or #16; for Rubinstein's exquisitely songlike, almost vocal way with a melody, listen to the preludes #13 or #15 or the major-key interlude in the Funeral March, as delicate and wistful as a memory. These recordings were made in 1946, so the sound doesn't have today's high-tech gloss, but the performances practically constitute a primer on Chopin playing.
