Recordings of some of the greatest Beethoven piano performances.

  • We Say...

Artur Schnabel recorded all the Beethoven piano sonatas between 1930-35, recordings considered by many some of the greatest Beethoven piano performances ever for their power and depth. He plays even the slighter works — the two Mozartean Op. 49 sonatas which have introduced generations of piano students to the composer — with no less care and beauty than he does the greatest sonatas in the series, works which require a virtuoso technique and a lifetime's wisdom. Schnabel's reading of the well-known first movement of the "Moonlight" Sonata may be a little quicker than you usually hear, poetic and serene but with a faint undercurrent of restless passion — a passion fully released in that sonata's stormy finale or in the first movement of the "Tempest" Sonata, Op. 31 No. 2.
