  • We Say...

Opening with a big all-cast number with stoic leads from Mohd. Rafi and Aziz Na, Jay Vijay is six tracks of over-the-top, heavy arrangements drenched in waterfalls of reverb. Strings of all sorts blanket the songs — lilting violins, harps, dulcimers, sitars and acoustic guitar solos. The centerpiece is "Sone Jaisi Tumhari": a bang-out 120 BPM bump-along from the ensemble featuring Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd. Rafi, Aziz Nazan and Asha Bhosle. Bhosle sings the main phrase and Mangeshkar answers knowingly with a honeyed "Ah-ha-ha-ah," while Rafi and Nazan trade the verses over hummingbird-winged tabla counter-beats. The nearly identical timbre of Rafi and Nazan's voices serve up a near-dizzying effect. This is hallmark big-sound ensemble work from Bollywood's big names.
