  • We Say...

There's no fluff in Ashley Cleveland's repertoire of vintage gospel ballads: from denominational schisms to archaic, Old Testament epics, Cleveland tackles spiritual music's heaviest subjects head-on. Luckily, the three-time Grammy-winning songstress has a voice to match her colossal subject matter, and her eighth studio album, God Don't Never Change, is a twelve-part testament not only to God, as the album title proclaims, but to the enduring power of traditional gospel. Notable tracks include the soaring "Joy Joy," where Cleveland is backed by a choir and a retro Hammond organ, "Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning," which takes some unexpected cues from classic rock and country, and "Sampson and Delilah," a big-throated Biblical epic set to Cleveland's earthy acoustic guitar.
