They Say...
The late '80s/early '90s were great times if you were a electro-goth rocker, as it appeared that every few months a new notable band would emerge. And while the Columbus, OH-based quintet the Wake never reached the same heights as some of the bands they toured with (Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails, etc.), they certainly left behind a steady trail of goth rock releases. They appear to be on hiatus circa the early 21st century, and to satisfy their fans' appetites, a double-disc set emerged in 2008, Blacklist. With the first disc being a "best-of" collection (with two rarities tacked on) and the second being a DVD (six tracks from a Mexico City performance in 1995, plus two rarely seen promo clips), Blacklist will appeal to fans both old and new. While they may have sounded like your average goth band from the era (yes, singer Troy Payne sounds like a Peter Murphy and Ian Curtis disciple), such ditties as "Harlot" and "Christine" prove that the Wake's music holds up pretty well, especially when compared to their competition at the time.
