They Say...
The first album from Ba Cissoko was a hard act to follow, with its jaw-dropping electric kora work which was simply a revelation from the Hendrix of the ancient instrument, Sekou Kouyate. For their sophomore effort that's still part of the fireworks, as on "Adouna," where the solo takes off from a laid-back groove that seems to be inspired by Manu Chao (whose influence can be felt on the ska beat of "On Veut Se Marier"). One of the band's strengths is making traditional material seem contemporary, whether playing electric or acoustic, and they do that here, as well as letting their rock god side slip through periodically (listen to the first cut, "Griot-Ba," for an example of that). This time around they've included a touch of hip-hop on "Silani," but although there's a rap, there's no doubt this music is from West Africa.. There are several guests on the album, but their role is to add color to the proceedings; there's never any doubt about the stars here. Kouyate's works is more seamlessly a part of the whole now, and when the twin koras work together, the songs can be majestically beautiful. With a sound that works equally well for world music and rock fans, they've created a perfect breakthrough album.
