  • They Say...

Badman Recording Company celebrated its fifth anniversary in 2002 with this stunningly relaxed and dramatic ten-song collection. Opening with the graceful folk of James William Hindle's "Slumberland," the pace picks up slightly with the shrewd and graceful synth pop of "Diner Girls" by Ill Lit. My Morning Jacket follows with the breezy and orchestral "Can You See the Hard Helmet on My Head?" from their Chocolate and Ice EP. Ex-Posies singer Ken Stringfellow is next with the power pop poignancy of "Down on My Knees" and Lanterna is featured on "Westside Highway" from its stellar Sands album. A live track by Hayden, the piano-fueled "Bass Song" from his Live at Convocation Hall album, gives way to Eric Shea & the High Deserters' simple and passionate "Reason & Rhyme." Misc is up next with its seductive and hypnotic "Korea," which is followed by ex-Spinanes singer Rebecca Gates and the elegantly inventive "Doos" from her Ruby Series EP. The disc closes with Tarnation vocalist Paula Frazer's tempered and graceful collaboration with Mark Eitzel on their cover of Scott Walker's "Rhymes of Goodbye." Badman released the budget-priced sampler in October 2002.
