An album of retooled originals? Okay. This sort of record is a potential mark for criticism -- "How unoriginal!," naysayers cry. But producer Dipstick's swirling electronic treatments of music by such artists as Jackson Brown ("These Days," sweetly sung by Barbara Manning), Russ Tolman, and Brass Monkey win you over. With his use of funk, ambient, lounge, and rock on Don't Rewind, Dipstick proves that remaking music is an art unto itself. Highlights include the aforementioned "These Days," the rhythmically charged "Stinging Nettle," which dances with tasty vibes and percussive candy, and actually much of the disc. This is cool, moody, and spacey stuff with bizarre vocal samples. Don't Rewind is great soundtrack fodder, if you're into that sort of thing. Dipstick's right -- don't rewind this record, just press play.
